If someone has stolen your identity, they may have a trade line that the bureau asked about when getting your free report, that you don’t know about. Thus, the bureau asking for proof of identity.

Any other site is considered - by the government - to be scam sites (which they are) You cannot go throught the credit bureaus directly to get your free FACT-ACT reports, even they will tell you to go to annualcreditreport.com if you are ordering the free reports.

It is not unusual at all for the credit bureaus to request a copy of your drivers license and/or of a utility bill to prove that you are who you say you are.

Here are the three major credit reporting companies.

What I do is request a credit report from one. Then about 3 months later I request a credit report from another company, and then request one from the third company about another 3 months later. (You are only allowed 1 free credit report in a one year period, from each company.) In that way, I can pretty much monitor my credit report all year long.

I have worked in this industry and know how very easy it is for something to be applied to your credit report that is wrong. It is also extremely easy for someone to use your SS# and screw with your credit.
