Credit Report ? : If a adverse report is paid/settled, can you have it removed from your credit report?
Karl asked:
I went through a divorce a few years ago and past debts that have been settled still show up on my credit report. I want to have them removed. Is there a way?

I don’t think that you can get them removed for 5 years, even if they are paid off

Sometimes repaying a bad debt or an old debt just restarts the 7 year clock for reporting on your credit report.

To clean up your credit report, you’ll need to order a copy of your credit report, determine what’s inaccurate or out of date, and then request that the credit bureaus fix the information. You may have to follow-up several times with each credit bureau before your credit report will be sparkly clean — or at least accurate. To do this right, you’ll need to know what the credit agencies are allowed to report and for how long.

NO it can not be REMOVED. It can legally reamin on your credit report for 7-10 years. If the debit is settled, then that can be reflected on your credit report!

Hi,
You CANNOT have any bad credit removed upon request or settlements. The Fair Credit Reporting Act states that the only way bad credit can be cleared is after 7 years.
Sorry to hear about your situation. Good luck.

Yes, but you have to request the removal in writing. Now remember there are 3 different agencies, you must contact each of the 3 - with the request, you will need to submit proof of amendment.

They CAN remove it if they decide to. They are not obligated to because at the time it was a past due account and they will change the status to paid in full but it still went to a negative status at one point. If you do get them to agree to remove it, make sure you get it in writing. You should have tried to negotiate before you paid it in full that the only way you would pay is if they DELETED the account completely from your credit profile.

Negatives fall off your credit report 7 years and 180 days from the date of first deficiency. Nothing can re-start this clock. This is per the FCRA. The good news is that the older the item, the less impact on your score.
At the time you settled the items, you could have requested delete for payment as part of the settlement. It’s too late for that now. You could try disputing the items with the credit bureau. Maybe the creditor won’t verify the item to the credit bureau and it will be removed. But don’t count on that working.
