Why are all companies allowed access to your credit report? What can be done to limit access?

Larry T asked:

In todays world it seems as long as you pose as a business you can access information on anyone you want. I know credit reporting agencies say that this doesn’t affect your ratings, but it seems like it does. Any business can see your report and credit scores, but you can’t see your own without paying. Why is that?

Gina S asked:

My credit report is horrible. However, I have paid off many outstanding debts. How long does it take for my credit score to start improving? Give me advice to fix my credit report/score? Thanks.
Does it stay on from the time it is reported, the time is becomes delinquent, or from the time it is paid off? Please answer as well. Thanks.
So what everyone is saying is that bad credit from the age of 18 stays with me for life? I had heard 7 years.

What is the difference between a credit score and a credit report?

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008
credit report
. asked:

I did my research and I realized that i have a good credit report standing.

I only have 2 accounts that I am currently using.
Out of those two, for one I do have a balance but I always pay my bills on time except for two times when i was late because, the credit card company gave me the wrong due dates
They did remove the late fees however.
But 7 open in total.
5 unused
Two of them are sallie mae for school
and the other
1 for victorias secret- never used it. If I do use it I pay it once the bill comes
and the other two i dont plan on using.

Does that mean I have a bad credit score?

Get Free Yearly Credit Report

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008
credit report
Anna Josephs asked:

Looking for a free yearly credit report? Many companies are selling credit repair secrets, credit repair “kits” and other information about credit issues because everyone wants good credit, many people have bad credit and most people do not know whom shall they contact and where to go for more information if they need help.

Credit report copy can be obtained from any or all of the three national credit reporting agencies that gather the information. If your installment debts consist entirely of amounts owed to large lenders—major credit card companies, banks, automobile manufacturers’ finance companies—chances are you only need to obtain a report from a single agency.

If you want a quick check of your credit report and score from just one of the three national credit bureaus you can get it but if you owe money or have recently paid off credit obligations to smaller creditors you should obtain credit reports from all three companies. The reason, said Storm, is that “creditors pay money to the reporting agencies to list your credit information. Most large companies report to all three agencies, but smaller companies may only report to one or two of them.”

One of the credit repair secrets that companies are selling is information about obtaining your credit report. You are entitled to a yearly free copy of your credit report. If you want to attempt to repair credit issues, obtaining your credit report is the first step.

It is a good idea to review the information on your credit reports on a regular basis even if you have excellent credit. A recent law has made it easier. You can view and print copies of your credit.

Correcting Errors on Your Credit Report

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008
credit report
S. Michael Windsor asked:

Correcting Errors on Your Credit Report

So what do you do if you receive your credit report and there are negative marks on it that you never even had any part in? This very situation has occurred for many individuals already and may very well occur again on someone’s credit report in the near future. If this ever happens to you, what are you supposed to do about it? The road is never easy in this case, but there are indeed ways to correct any errors on your credit report.

If you discover an error on your credit report, the very first thing you should do is contact your consumer credit reporting company that issued your report in writing. Yes, the FTC recommends a written statement be sent to the reporting company. In the letter you should include copies of all the relevant documents required as evidence that it is indeed an error. In addition, the required elements such as your name, address, an explanation of the erroneous situation at hand and why you are disputing the error with all errors that are being disputed circled on the copy of the credit report. Also in the letter, the suggested correction, such as a request to delete the item completely, should also be stated in the letter.

When delivering the letter off to your reporting company, remember to send it via certified mail in order to make sure that you get confirmation that they had indeed received it in the case there is a dispute in regards to someone not even getting the letter. In addition to a certified letter, make sure you make copies of the letter(s) as well in order to keep record on file in the case that there may be a dispute on their end.

After the reporting company receives your dispute letter, they will begin their investigation on the matter, that is, if they deem the dispute as not being frivolous. They will normally begin their investigation within 30 days of receiving your letter. During the investigation, the reporting company will forward all documents and disputes to the organization(s) in question in order for the disputed organization to do their own investigation of why they placed that item on your credit report. Once they complete their investigation, they must then send back their statement on whether it is truly an error or not and support that statement with further evidence of their own.

In the case that the information is indeed inaccurate, then the organization at fault must inform all credit reporting companies of their error and have it corrected. Once this is complete, the credit reporting company will send you a new, updated credit report after the inaccuracy has been corrected.

Now, if your item in question is indeed correct and the organization has the evidence to back it up, then you will also receive a written statement in regards to this issue and you will have an option, for a slight fee, to place a note in your credit report in regards to your dispute about the item. This statement will be provided to all who see your credit report in the future as well as those who already received your credit report.

Free credit report online includes all the information related to you like where you live, how you pay your bills and whether you have been sued, arrested or field as an bankrupt.

Some girl asked:

Ok, someone stole my driver’s license a few years ago and made checks out of my name and identity. A collection agency is on my credit report, along with other companies, that refer to these bad checks. How do I get them off of my credit report? I have a police report saying my driver’s license was stolen, and a few pages of copies of the fraudulent checks.

Ways To Resolve A Credit Report Dispute

Friday, September 5th, 2008
credit report
Sandra Stammberger asked:

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act the reporting company and the information provider are responsible for correcting any credit report disputes. However, they must first be made aware that you have credit report disputes. A person can report and correct errors in their credit report by following two easy steps.

Step one is to report your error to the consumer reporting company in writing and make them aware that you have a credit report dispute. Make sure you include all your personal information like your name, address, and a list of each credit report dispute that have. Remember to send your letter by certified mail to prove that you have initiated a credit report dispute. The consumer reporting company will then investigate your credit report disputes and respond in 30 days. If they find there is an error and the credit report dispute can be resolved by correcting it then they will forward the information to the other credit bureaus and your credit report will be revised.

After reviewing your credit report dispute the consumer reporting company may decide that they disagree with the items raised in your credit report dispute and decline to pursue the matter any further. They will send you all of the evidence that they have and the reasons for not pursuing your credit report dispute, along with a copy of your credit report.

Another way to handle a credit report dispute is to contact the particular creditor directly. Again, send the creditor a list of your credit report disputes in writing. Be sure to call your creditor and ask for the specific address of where credit report dispute issues need to be sent to ensure that there is no unnecessary delay in the credit report dispute being investigated. Many companies have a separate address for handling credit report disputes and it can take time for it to be forwarded to the correct address if you do not send it there initially. If you are correct in your credit report dispute and there is an error they will report the error to the credit bureaus and send you notification of the change.

Below is a sample credit report dispute letter :

Your Address, City, State, Zip Code

How can I find out how old an account on my credit report is?

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008
credit report
Megan C asked:

I pulled my credit report from all three bureaus today. On Equifax there is an account listed for a collection agency and all the information it lists is that is in an open account, the high balance, past due amount and that the account is 120 days past due. Then I noticed on all three reports there is an account that was for a credit card I opened in May of 1997. I vaguely remember this but the account is listed as closed and I believe I defaulted on (youthful mistake!). My question is this - how can I find out if the two accounts are related? And how can I determine how long they have been on my report?
